Bowral: The Perfect Sydney Day Trip
Known for its cool climate, historic streets and rolling countryside, the Southern Highlands has long been a favourite for a quiet reset. At its centre sits Bowral, a proper country town that feels established and walkable, with wide streets, old shopfronts and a sense of calm that comes from being surrounded by farmland rather than freeways.
Bowral is an easy 90 minutes from Sydney. Close enough to visit for the day, far enough to feel like you’ve left the city behind. It’s a place best enjoyed on foot, moving between a handful of good spots and letting the day unfold naturally.
Morning
Breakfast at Franquette Crêperie
Start on Bong Bong Street with breakfast at our sister venue, Franquette Crêperie. Many make the trip from Sydney, Canberra and the coast for an authentic French galette or sweet crêpe, some of the best coffee in town and a seat to ease into the day. It’s relaxed, something a little different and the perfect way to fuel up before exploring.
Late Morning
Bong Bong Street wander
Take your time wandering along Bong Bong Street. Begin at Gumnut Patisserie, an icon of the Highlands, and pick up a few treats to take home for later.
From there, browse local artisans and boutiques as you make your way towards some serious antiquing at Found Antiques, Dirty Janes and Bronte Tram.
Early Afternoon
High Street shops
Make your way across to High Street for a change of scene. With its alfresco laneways and outdoor tables, it feels more European than regional New South Wales. Stop in at Bare Body Beauty if you’re in the mood for a little self-care, browse boutique fashion at Angel Divine and TaTiana’s, visit the famous Bowral Sweets and Treats Lolly Shop, or wander through The Gilded Butler for homewares and gifts.
Late Lunch
Lucette Bistro
Finish the day with a late lunch at Lucette. Share a few plates, order a glass of wine and let the afternoon stretch out the French way before heading back to Sydney.
